USB Power

Right SENIT Forum peeps here's how to check out the power demands of your USB ports:

Start Run Dialog

Launch Device Manager

Open the Run dialog box by selecting Run from the Start Menu.

Type devmgmt.msc and click OK

Device Manager Tree

Locate USB Root Hub Node

This'll make you look right like an expert.

Open up the Universal Serial Bus controllers category and find the USB Root Hub node. You've probably got more than one USB Root Hub but that's ok.

Double click on the first USB Root Hub entry in the list.

USB Root Hub Power Properties

USB Root Hub Power Properties

The properties dialog should pop up. Select the Power page from list at the top.

This page gives you information about the power required by the device and the maximum power that can be provided by the socket/s.

In the screenshot the socket shown is be able to provide 500 mA of power and the (optical) mouse requires only 100 mA of this. Here are some other peripherals I have connected to other USB Root Hubs:

  • Webcam with LEDs: 300 mA
  • Canon LiDE USB-powered scanner: 500 mA
  • Belkin USB Wireless Adaptor: 300 mA
  • Traxsys Joystick: 100 mA

The Traxsys Joystick is the Standard (second) version, rather than the Joystick Plus.
