Clicker 4 Access Method 2:
Using a switch to support mouse use

Using the mouse to move around the grid while using a switch to select cells

Many users find it difficult to use the left/right 'click' buttons built into their joystick, rollerball or mouse. One way of solving this problem is to use one or two external switches that emulate these buttons. Users of headpointers (that usually have no built-in method of clicking) can often use an external switch in this way.

Using a switch to select cells

A switch can be connected to a computer to act as the left mouse button. The user can operate the switch with their other hand or indeed any part of their body. This is particularly useful to joystick and rollerball users who could find it difficult and time-consuming trying to press the little switch while not inadvertently adjusting the position of their cursor.

In this example, we have can see a BigTrack Rollerball with an external jelly bean switch added in to substitute the left button. The switch could be placed anywhere where comfortable voluntary can be found and it could be of any type.

You do not need to tell Clicker 4 that you are using a switch when it used in this manner as the computer interprets it as a left mouse click.

In order to plug a switch into a computer you will either need a switch interface or a switch-adapted rollerball, mouse, joystick or headpointer.

Trapping the mouse

A useful feature of Clicker is the ability to 'trap' the mouse, joystick, rollerball or headpointer inside the grid area so that the user can't accidentally click anywhere else on the screen. Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up Mouse Trapping.
